The Lele

The Lahaina Yacht Club is proud to announce the unveiling of our new Olson 30 yacht!

"Lele"

Lele is the ancient name of Lahaina. As Lahaina was an important way-point for Hawaiians traveling between the islands by canoe & later by ship. With a number of meanings including fly or jump, a point of departure to fly as in mokulele (airplane). Lele, a point throughout Polynesia as a departure point for the spirits of the dead.  Her name is pronounce with a short “e” and is not pronounced “Lay Lay”. Our selection of the name Lele has significance to who we are (LYC); where we are, where we sail, and a connection to Lahaina’s past. Take a stroll through the new harbor pavilion between the cannons and restrooms. Take a moment to read the signage that mentions the name Lele.
